The city of Venice might appear to be a romantic amalgam of canals and bridges, churches and
palaces, but the trained eye can date the various buildings and thereby discern the rise and fall of a
remarkable republic in a Europe of monarchies. This lecture will concentrate on the evolution of
Venice’s secular architecture.
As student, researcher and teacher, Dr. Stella Fletcher’s connections with Venice go back nearly
forty years. Her publications on Renaissance Italy and its legacy include Roscoe and Italy (2012).
